What is the Gamelan? Gamelan is an ensemble of tuned percussion consisting mainly of gongs, metallophones and drums originating from the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali.
Gamelan is often described as "one large instrument sounded by many players" as the musical parts combine to produce an inspiring and wonderful sound. It offers an enjoyable learning experience, providing a unique way of making music as a group.

It is accessible. At the end of the workshop participants will have performed and recorded a simple piece of Javanese Gamelan music.
It offers the opportunity for participants to play and experience music from another part of the world, developing children's cultural awareness.
It is an excellent vehicle for developing teamwork, social and co-ordination skills.
It offers the opportunity to learn together as a group, reinforcing listening skills and developing awareness of musical elements such as pulse, rhythm, tempo, texture and dynamics.
Traditionally Gamelan is most commonly used for accompanying puppetry, dance, theatre and storytelling and so lends itself naturally to multi-arts projects.
Occasional special projects will be offered which will aim to explore the relationship between Gamelan music and other traditional Indonesian art forms - dance, drama & puppetry

Come and play the Javanese Gamelan African Drums and Latin Percussion in our new WORLD MUSIC GROUP.
the group is open to all Key Stage 2 pupils with a good sense of rhythm and bags of enthusiasm!!
Tuesdays 5.00 - 6.00pm at the Music Centre.
