The aim of Rivington Junior String Ensemble is to develop the playing and listening skills of young string players in an enjoyable and social environment, and to encourage good orchestral discipline. There will be regular performance opportunities throughout the year. Ensemble playing complements the work done in instrumental lessons and is an important factor in promoting good progress.

New Century Strings is Bolton's advanced youth string orchestra.
New Century Strings was formed in September 1999 from string players in the Bolton Youth Orchestra. Its main aim is to improve the quality of string playing of its members. Currently New Century Strings has 20-30 players, and is hoping to increase this number. The ages of the players range from 13-19 years. New Century Strings is staffed by a highly skilled team of tutors who coach and, from time to time, play as soloists. They are led by Gerald Hopkin. The ensemble plays a wide range of music specially written for strings from across the historical and stylistic spectrum.
The ensemble has regular weekly rehearsals which are supplemented by a range of additional courses, workshops etc.
