New Century Strings is Bolton's advanced youth string orchestra.
New Century Strings was formed in September 1999 from string players in the
Bolton Youth Orchestra. Its main aim is to improve the quality of string playing
of its members. Currently New Century Strings has 20-30 players, and is hoping
to increase this number. The ages of the players range from 13-19 years. New
Century Strings is staffed by a highly skilled team of tutors who coach and,
from time to time, play as soloists. They are led by Gerald Hopkin. The ensemble plays a wide range of music specially written for strings from across the historical and stylistic spectrum.
The ensemble has regular weekly rehearsals which are supplemented by a range of additional courses, workshops etc.
